Grano Trattoria is a delightful neighborhood spot in Greenwich Village in NYC. Maurizio Crescenzo is the passionate owner and chef. Originally from Naples Italy, he brings his talent and years of experience close to home for New Yorkers.

The menu is a simple, seasonal one that focuses on quality over quantity. Every option from homemade pastas, to wood burning brick oven pizzas to entrees from the land and sea is created with care using only fresh, delicious ingredients.

While some of the portions are a little on the small side, don't let your eyes deceive you. You will walk away full and happy and savor every bite you eat after having an authentic meal.

The decor of Grano is simple and clean. The front room has lots of light and overlooks the lovely Jefferson Market Garden. The wait staff and Crescenzo himself are attentive, making sure you have everything that you need. They are also helpful making selections off the menu.

From among the appetizers, my guest and I tried Melanzane Alla Parmigiana, a delicious baked eggplant with tomato sauce and a Carciofini Alla Romana, roasted artichoke with pesto, bacon and pecorino romano. The second dish had a twist, since artichokes are out of season, they were replaced with brussel sprouts. While I am not typically a fan of them, I became one now. The brussel sprouts were thinly sliced and blended with the other ingredients like a flavorful salad.

One of the specials on the menu was homemade lasagna that tasted just like something you would find in an Italian grandma's kitchen with fresh pasta, meat, cheese and sauce. If they have it when you visit, order it.

For our entrees, I tried the Stinco Di Agnello Brasato, a braised lamb shank with rice cake and red wine reduction. The lamb was tender, flavorful and literally fell off the bone. My guest had the Involtino Di Pollo Ripieno, a juicy piece of chicken stuffed with mozzarella and spinach.

The desserts are also made in house. We tried the creamy and classic Tiramisu. We also tried the Torta Di Cioccolato E Nocciole, a chocolate hazelnut tart, and ate every last bite of chocolatey goodness.

Grano Trattoria is romantic for a date but also causal enough for dinner with friends.

Whether or not you are in the Village, I recommend stopping by for an delicious, authentic Italian meal.

They also have a sister restaurant Taverna Di Bacco which I look forward to visiting later this week.
