DeMarcus Cousins and the Sacramento Kings reached an agreement on a contract extension on Thursday night. The extension was first reported by the Sacramento Bee.
The contract extension is a four-year, $62 million deal that has Cousins playing for the Kings through the 2018-19 season. Cousins was eligible for an extension for up to five years and $80 million, according to the Associated Press. The Kings had until October 31 to reach a deal, otherwise Cousins would have become a restricted free agent next summer.
Cousins joins Washington Wizards guard John Wall, Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders, and Indiana Pacers’ Paul George on the list of 2010 draftees who have received extensions. Wall and George landed five-year deals, while Sanders signed a four-year deal worth $44 million, according to ESPN.
Cousins averaged 17.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists last season. He has been one of the NBA’s best players. However, he has had multiple suspensions from the Kings and the NBA for his behavior. The Kings' new leadership insists that Cousins can flourish with them.
