CenturyLink Field roared Sunday night as the Seattle Seahawks routed the San Francisco 49ers and set the world record for the loudest crowd at any stadium.
The Seattle Times confirmed the result with Guinness World Records judge Phil Robertson, who compared the noise level to that of a soccer stadium.
"It's a far louder, tribal kind of passion," and "the sound is more continuous," he said. "There's passionate people in soccer, but here you see veins bulging out of necks."
According to Robertson, the mark was set late in the first quarter when Hawks defender Michael Bennett sacked 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The decibel reading on that play reached 131.9 decibels.
At that point Seattle had passed the previous record, but the 12th Man wasn’t done yet. Not only did fans break the record of 131.76 decibels set at a 2011 soccer match in Turkey, but they shattered their own record to reach 136.6 decibels, CBS Sports reports.
Seahawk fans have always believed that its crowd is the loudest anywhere and fans pride themselves with the noise they create when opposing teams take the field. The 2.36 false starts per game is the highest average in the NFL since 2005. At times the crowd noise can nearly reach the noise of a Boeing 747. But just in case there was any doubt, Seattle fans now have bragging rights and a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest fans ever.
