The fall season of TV is beginning to kick off and one of the new shows, Fox's Sleepy Hollow, has been receiving positive reviews.
Los Angele Times' Mary McNamara sees that the spooky show "could be a keeper."
Pilots are tasked with difficult issue of introducing characters and the story in a quick and interesting enough manner to draw in the audience and convince them to return for more and Sleepy Hollow manages that. McNamara wonders though, that perhaps too much happens so that, "it's not quite clear where the story is going to go next."
Sleepy Hollow alters and transplants the well-known spooky story to present day where the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane wake up in the present day. Unfortunately the Horseman wakes up first and stars beheading people.
Kelly West of Cinema Blend liked Tom Mison as Crane, saying "if there's anything that stood out among the leads, it's Mison's ability to play up the severity of the situation when necessary, and then play it down with a bit of dry humor when the tension needs to be eased."
West also says the pilot smartly doesn't keep going back to the idea that Crane is from the past and making jokes of it.
Not everyone was so positive, with Boston Globe's Matthew Gilbert says the backstory "gums up the works in a big way," which could derail the show down the road if it gets too into prophesies and mythology.
