Mack Scherzer's 20th win of the season slipped away from him but he didn't mind as the Tigers trumped the Royals 3-2.
Avila's second home run was a solo homer in the eighth inning that put the Tigers up 3-2 essentially winning the game Sunday. Tigers reliever Drew Smyly gave up a run to let the Royals tie it up in the top of the eighth before Avila drilled one over the right-center field wall, his 11th homer of the year.
According to KansasCity.com Royals manager Ned Yost regrets his decision to leave Jeremy Gurthie in the game in the eighth inning. "I thought (Guthrie) could get us through the inning,” Yost said. “At that point, he had pitched himself out of some big jams, and I thought he had really got settled in."

"We're just looking to win the game," Scherzer said. "I don't care if I win another game, if we win our division, that's all that matters."
Scherzer has two losses and two no decisions since starting 19-1. Sunday, Scherzer allowed one run on five hits along with 12 strikeouts and a walk through seven innings. According to USA Today reports that the Detroit at the top of the AL Central entered five games ahead of second-place Cleveland, which faced the Chicago White Sox.
