NBC's Chicago Fire is teaming up with TODAY to honor heroic firehouse dogs across America.

Hundreds of dogs were nominated by their firehouses, who sent in photos and descriptions of why the dogs are so special. Tuesday morning, the top three finalists were featured on TODAY.

The three top firehouse dogs are Dempsey, a mastiff-boxer mix from Indianapolis, Smokey, a Labrador retriever mix from Jacksonville, IL and Wilshire, a Dalmatian from Los Angeles

The dogs are competing for a spot in an episode of Chicago Fire. The winner will be chosen by online voters and revealed on October 1.

Voters can go online and vote for their favorite dog here. Voting ends Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. ET.
Chicago Fire, starring Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney, takes a look at the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Chicago Firehouse 51. The heroes in the show are portrayed as dangerous, courageous and exhilarating while carrying out one of American's noblest professions. Season 2 of the show premieres tonight, September 24 on NBC.
