Well it looks like the Browns have wasted no time at all in filling the void that the Trent Richardson trade has left. They will sign Willis McGahee pending a physical to, more than likely, take over as the starting running back.
NBC Sports reports that there is no guarantee that McGahee will pass his physical after his season was cut short last year due to a knee injury. But if he does pass the physical it is expected that he takes over as not only the starting running back, but the workhorse. The other running backs left on the roster, after the Richardson trade are Chris Ogbonnaya and Bobby Rainey.
McGahee was the starting running back for the Denver Broncos last season before getting hurt. He played in 10 games and rushed for 731 yards and four touchdowns before suffering the knee injury. He is now 32 years old, and is being brought in to give the Browns a little bit of credibility.
As for McGahee's health concern, NFL.com believes that the Giants signing Brandon Jacobs over McGahee says something about his health. The Giants brought in both McGahee and Jacobs for a workout after week one, but chose to sign Jacobs, and when you're looking at just the numbers, McGahee would seem like the clear choice.
If McGahee does pass his physical and get a contract from the Browns, it will likely be a one year deal, as McGahee is viewed as a placeholder until they get another running back for the future. The Browns are in full future mode now, and the potential signing of McGahee signals they will need to find Richardson's long-term replacement next season.
