The New York Yankees have been plagued by injuries this year. C.C. Sabathia is the latest Yankee injury victim, as he has a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring, the team announced on Monday.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that Sabathia suffered the injury during Friday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants. He was scheduled to make one more regular-season start on Wednesday, but that won’t happen as he is done for the season. No replacement starter has been announced.
"We have hopes and beliefs that next year will be a better year for him and for us,'' Cashman said, according to ESPN New York. "There's no point in having him make his last start with an injury.''
Sabathia finished the season with a 14-13 record and a 4.78 ERA. The 4.78 ERA is the highest in his career. His ERA was 77th best of 82 qualifying pitchers, according to the New York Times. Sabathia has been an ace for the Yankee, and was a serious contender for the AL Cy Young award in 2010 and 2011. But he has had to deal with injuries the last two seasons. After the 2011 season, he underwent knee surgery and spent two stints on the DL last year.
Sabathia is guaranteed $76 million through 2016 with a vesting option for 2017. The vesting option is worth $25 million. Sabathia is expected to be ready for spring training.
