This week on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, one dancer would be banished from Abby's kingdom in a fairy tale themed week.
The seven remaining dancers waited for the challenge to start, and Abby walked in with a wand to announce that this week’s theme was ‘modernized fairy tales’ and the skill would be turns. In the challenge, the dancers would be tested on their turns, and the winner would receive a private lesson with Abby herself!
Ally was the first competitor eliminated because she had the least technical ballet training of the bunch. Her mom, Tiffany, wasn’t too pleased and said she knew where Abby could put her wand!
After Trinity, JoJo, and Gianna, were eliminated, the remaining three had to reverse the direction of the whole combination, doing the turns the opposite way. With that new twist, McKaylee was out, leaving only Kalani and Travis. Abby announced Kalani as the winner, and the moms thought it wasn’t fair, because Kalani is Abby’s favorite.
In Kalani’s private with Abby, they worked on perfecting her attitude turns. Abby also told her that she has the natural body and flexibility of a dance, and the two other judges want to see more of a starving artist. She’s definitely Abby’s favorite, and they shared a big hug at the end of the lesson.
All of the other dancers were starting to learn their rehearsal routines. When Abby stepped in to take a look at their progress, she critiqued both Ally and Trinity’s feet in their duet. The other duos were also struggling – Travis and Kalani with their lifts, and Gianna matching McKaylee’s technique. Gianna’s mom's big mouth wasn’t helping her out either. JoJo, though, was the lucky dancer with a solo this week. She would be portraying Rapunzel with a four-foot long braid in her hair. Her mom even re-dyed the naturally brown roots of her blonde hair to get ready for the role.
JoJo’s solo was the first up on competition night. She showed her sassy side as she danced to hip-hop/ pop song, “I Like My Hair Like This,” and even completed turns with her four-foot braid whacking her in the face. Abby said that she nailed the turns, and Rachelle said she performed like a “Broadway pro.”
Ally and Trinity’s contemporary duet, “Evil Stepmother,” was up next. Trinity portrayed a princess while Ally was her evil stepmother. I liked this dance even better than JoJo’s and thought that Ally’s theatricality blew it away. The judges didn’t think she was so great, though, and were sticklers about her feet and leg positions. Travis and Kalani as an ice prince and snow queen performed next. My eyes were on Kalani with her sparkling costume and regal presence the whole time. At the end of the number, Abby pointed out that Kalani is the only dancer so far who spun in her bare feet, which is trickier than in shoes. As for Travis, Abby wasn’t impressed, but Rachelle saw improvement in Travis’s partner work.
“Pinnochio,” McKaylee and Gianna’s duet, was up next. The choreography was upbeat and spunky, but the two girls weren’t in sync in their movements throughout the routine. The judges weren’t impressed by either of them, and Gianna’s mom made sure to yell at her afterward.
After the judges discussed eliminations, the dancers and their moms were called back. They told JoJo she was the best performance of the evening. Abby saved four other dancers with her ‘fairy dust,’ leaving Ally and Gianna in the bottom two.
Before Abby could announce their decision though, Cindy chimed in and pleaded with the judges to not send her daughter, Gianna, home. Cindy’s speech certainly didn’t help her cause, but nonetheless it was Ally who was sent home.
