The Daily Show is losing executive producer/showrunner Rory Albanese, who is leaving to take his talents to Los Angeles. There, he will work on the next chapter of his career, hoping to break into primetime comedies.
Albanese will wrap-up his tenure at Comedy Central’s popular news satire show on Thursday, notes Deadline, which first confirmed the news. The producer, who also does stand-up comedy, has been among the Daily Show teams that won nine Emmys for best variety series and best writing for a variety series. (The 10-year streak ended last month when The Colbert Report won.)
He has been an executive producer on the show for the past seven years. According to Mediate, Albanese co-wrote Earth: The Book with other Daily Show writers and host Jon Stewart. He joined the show in 1999.
The Daily Show is looking to replace Albanese by promoting from within, notes Deadline.
The next step for Albanese is developing sitcoms. He has signed a script development deal with Warner Bros. Television and his first project will be a father-son multi-camera comedy. It has already found a home at CBS.
