In Sergel’s Square in Stockholm, Sweden, about a dozen men in business suits and red masks, carrying silver briefcases handcuffed to them, make their way to the subway below. A woman follows them onto the subway car, and as the men stare at her, she closes her eyes and smashes the emergency glass, knocking out the lights. Everyone gets off at the next stop and a security guard finds the men in the red masks dead, and one with his hand severed off and his briefcase missing.
In the tunnel, we see the woman, somehow knowing the combination to the briefcase, open it and find a case of diamonds. She quickly puts it in her backpack and as a subway car whizzes past, she vanishes.
On the S.H.I.E.L.D. plane, Fitz talks to Ward about the new gun he has designed, a “night-night gun” that can not only throw a person back but knock them out as well.
Coulson finds Skye in the cargo hold in one of the cars, stating that she misses her van. Coulson gives her an assignment to find out how someone is stealing millions of dollars-worth of diamonds by cracking a security system.
The team land in Stockholm. Coulson explains to Melinda and Skye that a gem brokerage hired 55 men to dress identically, carrying a randomly assigned briefcase, sending them on 25 different routes. Only one briefcase actually carried the diamonds but they were still stolen. This was part of a string of diamond heists, totaling over 30 million dollars. Coulson goes on to explain the description of the suspect, a woman, and that she closed her eyes before it happened. Skye guesses that she could have ESP, which Melinda quickly debunks. Skye states that the suspect closing her eyes is either completely random or a totally important detail. Melinda asks why HQ is interested in this; Coulson explains that he picked up this case on his own. Skye looking on her phone finds pictures of the men in the red masks on social media.
Back on the bus, Coulson looks through social media sites, using face recognition software for the men in red masks. As Melinda and Skye look with him, Coulson spots the suspect. “Akela Amador” Coulson states. Melinda asks if he’s sure. Coulson responds yes, he’s sure, because she was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and Coulson is the one who trained her.
Akela Amador (Pascale Armand) was last seen 7 years ago while on assignment she was believed killed with two other agents, Coulson explains. Ward joins them and states that they have tracked her path, and have also found possible buyers of the diamonds, but confirms none of them have been contacted by Amador. Melinda suggests to notify HQ to help locate Amador but Coulson insists on holding off on that. He sends Melinda and Ward off to see what they can find on her location. Coulson explains to Skye that he feels like he might have pushed Amador too far when he was training her. Skye comments that Amador’s actions now are on her, not Coulson.
Amador is in a hotel room. She closes her eyes, moving as if she’s scanning the room, then quickly picks up a golf club and opens the door, dragging a man inside. “The agreement was to come alone” she says to him. He says he did but she quickly tells him that there is a man in the next room and waiting by the stairs. Scared the man says that he brought them for his protection when he leaves. He asks to see the diamonds and Amador opens a can of golf balls, dropping one into his hand. She pours water on the ball, disintegrating the ball and revealing the diamonds. He hands her a key card for payment.
Zloda, Belarus, is where the team is headed to get Amador, driving in the “short bus”, a large white van with Coulson, Ward, Fitz-Simmons, and Skye. Coulson assures a worried Fitz that they don’t even need to leave the van, that they will be tracking Amador electronically while he and Ward look for her in town.
Skye calls Ward letting him know that they’ve found a weird signal and video feed that Amador may be communicating on.
Coulson shows Amador’s picture to a store owner and she states that “she’s my angel”, explaining how she knows things, and told her to go to the doctor. The doctor found a tumor and said it saved her.
Fitz-Simmons try to figure out where the signal is coming from, and looks like scrambled images on their screen. Skye tells Fitz to step aside and she’s able to hack into the video feed, showing a road. The video soon shows a van, then shows an x-ray image of the van. They quickly realize it’s their van when Amador runs into it with a moving van, toppling over the “short bus”.
Melinda disapprovingly watches Coulson and the team as they come back onto the bus.
Ward talks to Coulson saying that Amador has basically kicked them in the teeth and Fitz-Simmons and Skye are OK but rattled. Skye comes in and says she may be able to get the playback on the encrypted broadcast and that’s how Amador was watching them.
Skye hacks in and they see Amador in front of a mirror. Coulson asks where is the camera. Amador puts a screwdriver up to her eye and they realize the camera is inside her eye. Coulson and Melinda argue about Coulson trying to bring Amador in, rather than take her out, when Amador writes down “Can I sleep?” As Amador receives a message Coulson realizes she’s being controlled by someone. He states that they need to watch the video feed in shifts. Melinda volunteers for the first shift.
Skye goes to Coulson’s office and states that she’s supportive of brining Amador in.
Hours later, Coulson finds Fitz asleep at his desk, and asks where Melinda is. From the video feed playback, he realizes Melinda has figured out where Amador is and has gone to her.
Amador wakes to find Melinda in her hotel room. Amador states that it’s either going to be her or Melinda that make it out of the room alive. Amador reaches for her gun and Melinda quickly disarms her. Amador breaks the lamp, and is still able to see via her camera eye. Amador picks up the gun, about to kill Melinda, Coulson breaks into the room tranquilizing Amador.
Amador wakes up in a holding cell with Coulson. He assures her she is safe, that the people controlling her camera eye think she killed Melinda and has gone on with her mission. Coulson explains that Ward is wearing a pair of glasses that now has the feed from her controller, going through with her mission at a facility until they can disarm the camera inside her eye.
Ward and Skye reach the facility and Ward is instructed to go inside with the card key.
Amador explains to Coulson that she was captured and imprisoned for 4 years. Having lost sight in her right eye, her captures took advantage of that and implanted the camera eye, with a fail-safe that would kill her if she didn’t follow instructions. Coulson and Amador begin to profile her controller. Simmons tells Coulson that they are ready for Amador’s surgery.
With Skye’s direction, Ward passes through building security and helps him avoid giving himself away to the controller.
Melinda closes in on monitoring the location of the controller. Coulson goes out, saying he’ll deal with it on his own.
Simmons tells Amador that she can only give a local anesthetic. Hands shaking and hesitant to put the needle in her eye, Amador calmly say’s “I’ll do it” and puts it in herself.
Outside a secured office, Skye and Ward receive a message to flirt with the guard in order to get past. Skye advises Ward to try to “bromance” him, talk about sports and girls. Without any luck, Ward is forced to take the guard out. Once inside the secured room, Ward only sees two men typing on typewriters, and a blackboard surrounding the room with equations on it. Ward goes in for a closer look at a section of the blackboard when the controller snaps a picture, and advises the mission is done.
Melinda radios to Coulson the location of the controller.
Ward leaves the room and realizes that the guard was supposed to enter a password into the computer otherwise an alarm goes off, which Ward finds out the hard way. Telling Skye to meet him on the south side of the building, Ward leaves but is spotted by a guard.
Simmons asks Fitz to disconnect the kill-switch from Amador’s eye socket. Fitz calls Ward to ask him a question but Ward accidentally looks at himself in a mirror, giving away his secret to the controller. Fitz cuts the camera eye just before the kill-switch is initiated. Ward finds Skye and they escape.
Melinda directs Coulson closer to the controller, advising he’s 20 meters away. Coulson confronts him, flashing his badge, but the controller we find out is being controlled himself, as his kill-switch behind his eye is activated.
Coulson explains that Amador’s controller was former MI6, and Amador realizes he was trapped just like she was. Coulson goes on to state that what was on the blackboard may have been alien. Guards arrive to take Amador to custody and Coulson assures her that she’ll get a fair trial, and that he’ll even testify on her behalf. Coulson walks away and Melinda escorts her to the car. Amador accusingly asks “What did they DO to him?” Melinda doesn’t understand and Amador gets in the car.
Coulson finds Skye in the car in the cargo hold again, and joins her.
Amador in her cell, happily is able to go to sleep without any worry of asking permission.
Fitz and Ward play cards, and Ward calls and raises the stakes. Fitz tells Ward that he can read him and his tells. Skye, from an earpiece in Fitz ear, is hidden in her bunk wearing the glasses with the see-through vision. She warns Fitz that if she uses them to read Ward’s hand, that she’ll also see Fitz naked. Fitz quickly folds his hand and leaves. Skye uses the glasses to look at Ward.
