The Philadelphia 76ers have signed center Daniel Orton to a multi-year contract.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the team signed the 6-foot-10, 275-pound center and waived center Tim Ohlbrecht to make room on the 20-man preseason roster.
Orton, a 29th overall draft pick by the Orlando Magic in 2010, played for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. He was released by the club last week.
During his rookie season, the Magic sent him to the Development League to play with the New Mexico Thunderbirds, however, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in just his second game.
The following year, Orton averaged 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 16 games with the Magic. He produced similar numbers last year with the Thunder averaging 2.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 13 games.
The center appeared in one preseason game with Oklahoma City, where he recorded six points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks in 19 minutes, notes NBA.com.
Whether or not Orton will be the starting center when the Sixers open the regular season remains to be seen. Signing him to a multi-year deal though, shows that the organization believes he can help the team win, rather than be just another big body on the floor.
