Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son died on Friday after being on life support. He was brutally beaten to death by his mother’s boyfriend. The Minnesota Viking’s running back immediately went to his son’s side when he heard the news. But news broke out today that his son may not be his.

According to TMZ, Peterson only recently found out that he was the father. He saw his son for the first time when the child was put on life support. Sources have told TMZ that the mother of the child had done a paternity test with an ex-boyfriend of hers because she wanted to collect child support from him. The test turned out negative, so she turned to Peterson when she remembered that they had a sexual encounter years ago. Peterson was supposed to plan a trip to South Dakota to meet the child, but when he heard the news about the beating, he dropped everything to be with him.

Police arrested Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, and he was charged with aggravated assault of an infant.

According to USA Today, the incident happened in Patterson’s apartment. Paterson claimed that the child was choking but it became apparent that it wasn’t an accident.

Paterson could be facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted of aggravated assault. Additional charges will be added now that the infant has passed away.
