VICTIM: Jamie Delcampo
SCENE OF THE CRIME: The body is found in a burnt car
SQUIDTERN Wendall
The episode begins with two car junkyard employees arguing over who gets to keep the car; after one of the employees finds a skull in the back seat and runs off, the other is left to call the police.
Sweets, now on leave, has been working at the Adam's Community Center. Booth comes to visit, and tries to convince Sweets to help out with necessary cases. After some convincing, Sweets agrees.
At the scene of the crime Bones, Cam, and Hodgins attempt to recover evidence from the cars charred remains. The task proves too difficult, and as a result, they send the car back to the lab.
Back in the lab, Hodgins decides that the only way to recover evidence safely from the car is to remove its roof, and grab evidence from above. This is how the bullet is discovered. Angela identifies the victim as DelCapo, a member of "Las Estrellas Locas, spanish for "The Crazy Stars."
Booth recovers Sweets, and they head to the office to start on the case. Las Estrellas Locas are in war with four other gangs, making the case critical. Sweets urges Booth to let him speak to Delcampo's girlfriend, and with that, they head deep into the gang's neighborhood.
Surprisingly, Sweets can speak Spanish (well sort of). Delcampo's girlfriend, Maria answers the door. Mocking Sweets' spanish, she is very aggressive towards them. When her son, also one of the students at Sweets' community center opens the door, Booth defensively almost shoots.
Back at the lab, Wendell finds part of an earring and Brennan discovers that the victim was hit with an axe due to marks on the spinal vertebrae. They later discover that whatever hit the vertebrae was made of lead, ergo a bullet.
Ballistics determine that the same gun that killed the victim is the same gun used in the other gang shootings. While Bones and Wendell discover that the body has two entrance wounds, but no exit wounds, puzzling them.
Sweets and Booth go to interrogate Curtis Martin, a known gang member and their prime suspect. Booth continually tries to comfort Sweet about his Pelant insecurities. While speaking to him, they are caught in a drive by shooting! Two Estrellas Locas are killed.
Brennan is angry with Booth for not informing her about the drive by shooting. He apologizes. Brennan is concerned for Maria's child. Booth leaves to interrogate Martin.
Martin refuses to speak, but after some convincing, he cooperates.
Bones explains to Cam her confusion about the bullet wounds. Angela leads them through scenarios. They discover the blow was delivered from the front, non execution style from below.
A 7th victim is found with the same library gun. And thus, the plot thickens.
The victim is a hispanic female, 22 years old. Her name is Adriana Garcia. It is later discovered that she was sleeping with Delcampo. With an uncovered affair, the next logical step is to re-interrogate Maria, Delcampo's girlfriend. However, she has been interrogated multiple times, and she is familiar with the procedure. She proves difficult to interrogate.
Sweets talks to her child, and realizes that he knows something. Because he is a minor, Maria has to be present when speaking to him. Despite his mother's threats, he admits to killing Delcampo to protect his mother. Enraged, Maria slaps him. Booth detains her.
Because he was acting in self defense, the boy will not be arrested, yet they need his help to acquire the library gun to stop the crimes. Unfortunately, he doesn't know where the gun is, but he does know how has it.
With his help, they catch Anna, a gang member responsible for multiple death's and recover the gun.
The boy is brought into foster care, where Sweets makes sure he is taken care of.
The team celebrates Sweets. Even Brennan admits that they needed his psychological expertise on the case. Despite all of the compliments, Sweets wants to use the rest of his leave. Though saddened, everyone understands.
Next week Pelant is back and Bones is endgame.
