Brad Pitt’s 50th birthday is coming up in December, and he’s taking time to reflect on his life and successful career.

According to Today, the A-list actor opened up to Ann Curry about why his role in 12 Years a Slave is so important.

“It’s one of those few films that cuts to the base of our humanity,” Pitt says. “It’s why I got into film in the first place.”

12 Years a Slave is a historical drama that follows the story of a free man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Pitt plays the supporting role of a Canadian abolitionist in the Steve McQueen directed film, and also serves as a producer.

The Academy Award nominee has had an extremely successful career. He has starred in many critically acclaimed films, including The Tree of Life, Money Ball, and World War Z.

Pitt has also experienced success in his personal life. He is engaged to Angelina Jolie and the lovebirds raise six children together.

E ! Online reports that although Pitt loves spending time with his kids, he doesn’t plan on showing the film to his youngest children.

“Maybe my eldest I would, right now,” he explained. “I’d rather for the others to get a little bit older and understand the dynamics of the world a little more.”
Pitt also revealed that he isn’t nervous about turning the big 5-0. “I haven’t minded a bit,” he said. “I have no complaints.”
