Charlize Theron, Amy Poehler and Nicole Kidman were just a few of Hollywood's influential women who showed up on Friday for Variety's Power of Women luncheon. They were there to be honored for their philanthropic work.
Theron has been outspoken about HIV/AIDS research and awareness said, "It's impossible for me to accept this award because there's someone here so much more powerful than me." The Young Adult actress pointed towards her mother as she spoke onstage, according to E! News.
"I hope you're OK with me giving this award to my mom," Theron added. "That b*tch was building roads in Africa when no woman was doing that. I thank you, Mom, for teaching me to by your actions how to be a strong woman, and for turning me into a p*ssy every time I talk to you."
Poehler also spoke onstage of her work with Worldwide Orphans. "Open your eyes and realize that there are so many children in the world who have nothing," she said with tears in her eyes. "They have nothing. They have no one who lights up when they walk in a room, and no clothes, or safety, or food. And so who are we to be in this room, and be somebody living this life without helping them?"
The Parks and Recreation star injected a little humor into her speech, ending it by saying, "Remember, giving to charity is good for your skin, and makes your ass smaller!"
USA Today reports that Kidman also spoke during her luncheon. She talked about her mother saying, "I was raised by a feminist mother. And yes, she said never be frightened about using the 'F' word. So I'm not."
Several other Hollywood women were honored at the luncheon as well, including Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures, for working with Teen Line. Kerry Washington was there for her time with the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Hudson were also among the honorees.
