David Tennant has signed on to star in the Fox remake of ITV's Broadchurch.

The Doctor Who actor will reprise his role from the U.K. version as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, Entertainment Weekly is reporting.

Tennant earned extremely positive reactions to his original portrayal in the show as the sulky detective Hardy who is new to the town of Broadchurch.

Naturally, Fox plans on transplanting the show from the small English sea-side town to an American town. Chris Chibnall, the series creator, will be writing the premiere episode. Dan Futterman and Anyon Epstein joined the production as showrunners and executive producers.

TV Guide notes the Scottish actor will be using an American accent for the role as a new detective in a town that is shocked by a murder.

Fox has said the show will be a part of its "event series" programming, which is smart since Broadchurch was only eight episodes.

Chibnall told EW, "I'm very, very fascinated to see this story in a different landscape with an acting ensemble that is just as strong but taken from really great American actors." He also said that Fox is giving him the freedom "to make something that is hopefully as good if not better than the British version."

With Tennant joining the American version, it casts further doubt that he will be returning to the second series of the British version of Broadchurch.
