Fox has ordered a new comedy series from comedian John Mulaney, a former Saturday Night Live writer.
The network said that the multi-camera format project is based on Mulaney’s life and is currently titled Mulaney. It will be produced by Universal Television, continuing Fox’s relationship with the studio. Universal TV already produces Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project for Fox.
SNL creator Lorne Michaels will executive produce. Seinfeld vet Andy Ackerman will direct the pilot and co-executive produce.
Mulaney, 30, created the series, which will be set in New York. He will play an aspiring comedian who has to deal with his boss, neighbors and his roommates. His boss will be played by Martin Short.
“John is one of the sharpest and most skilled next-generation comedic voices out there, who also happens to be surrounded by the best of the best on this new show,” Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment for Fox, said in a statement. “I am personally thrilled to be working with Lorne Michaels again, a friend and show business hero who knows better than anyone how to build a show around talent. Add in the comedy magic of Marty Short and the seasoned hand of Andy Ackerman, and I believe we have the makings of something really special here.”
According to Variety, the show was initially set up at NBC. It is the latest SNL-linked project at Fox, as the network is also working with Will Forte on a new pilot called The Last Man on Earth. Former SNL star Andy Samberg also stars in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
