Grambling State University and the University of Louisiana System is conduction an institutional review of their policies in an effort to find room for improvement, based on issues that football players brought up last week.
"I believe good things can come from creative tension," said Grambling President Frank Pogue to the UL Board of Supervisors Tuesday, according to USA Today. "You can use creative tension to bring attention to the needs of society. I intend to work closely with Dr. (Sandra) Woodley to develop and conduct a comprehensive review of Grambling's academics, facilities, student services, athletics and financial needs to make our university stronger."
Among the issues that caused the players to boycott were the condition of athletic facilities, health concerns, long bus rides to games and the firing of head coach Doug Williams.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the university has struggled with budget cuts since 2008. Grambling's state funding has been cut by about 57 percent, with the athletic budget taking a huge cut as well. "The financial situation at Grambling is severe," said University of Louisiana System president Sandra Woodley.
As we previously reported, Jackson State University was forced to cancel their homecoming game due to Grambling State's forfeiture last weekend. GSU plans to compete in their game this weekend.
