Guillermo del Toro has directed the latest Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" opening sequence.

The opening couch gag pays tribute to many iconic monsters or scenes, Los Angeles Times reports. Even del Toro's monsters make appearances, such as those from Pacific Rim, Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy.

De Toro said, "We talked about doing it around the movies I have done, but I felt I'd rather mix those images with the creatures and monsters of film, which have influenced me enormously."

"So, I said, 'Why don't we do a really long riff on the title sequence, rather than just a couch gag?'" del Toro added.

Executive producer Al Jean was happy to have del Toro be a part of their annual Halloween-themed episode. The newest episode will contain a homage to Freaks, a Dr. Seuss riff and a third story about Bart and Lisa both having their heads on the same body.

Jean said of the opening, "There's very little you could think of that's missing" from del Toro's opening.

The L.A. Times notes that del Toro joins others who famously directed the couch gag, such as John Kricfalusi (Ren and Stimpy), Bill Plympton and even Banksy.
