Oscar winner Halle Berry has been cast in Extant, a new CBS show that Steven Spielberg is producing. It will air next summer.

“There's only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career,” Spielberg said in a statement released by the network. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.”

Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment president, also added praise for Berry, noting, “Her talent and ability to immerse herself into every performance has created memorable roles that have resonated with audiences everywhere.”

This will be Berry’s first role in a TV series. She called her role as an astronaut who returns home after a year-long solo mission an “incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman.”

Today’s announcement also confirmed that CBS Television Studios agreed to a first-look production deal with Berry and her producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.

In August, CBS gave Extant a straight-to-series order for 13 episodes. It will be produced by Amblin TV and CBS TV Productions and written by Mickey Fisher.

CBS is hoping that Extant becomes as big a hit as Under The Dome, which Spielberg also produced and was renewed for a second season.
