Lives were taken and historic property is gone after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Central Visayas on Tuesday morning.

At 8:12am, areas of the Philippines were left in disarray after an earthquake struck southeast Carmen, Bohol. “I was fast asleep when suddenly I woke up because my bed was shaking. I was so shocked, I could do nothing but hide under the bed," one of the victims told ABS-CBN news reporters.

The “major earth quake,” classified by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head, Renato Solidum, dismantled major hospitals, public markets, power lines, and a school, where it is possible that children are trapped inside, according to Rappler.com. It was followed by two shockwaves measuring 5.0 magnitudes.

A child died and at least five were injured in a stampede inside a gymnasium. Four people were confirmed dead at a fish market that collapsed in Cebu, and the Philippine Information Agency Central Visayas confirmed that at least 30 people were injured in the incident. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that so far 28 people are dead and 33 were injured.

The head of Cebu Disaster Management, Neil Sanchez, told ABS-CBN news ,“communication lines are quite difficult here. Even the disaster reduction management office has been damaged. We had to move elsewhere”. The earthquake cancelled sea travels, flights, and many schools throughout the region.
