This week on New Girl, Jess is planning a Halloween party for all of her friends, but Schmidt is still being a downer and threatens to ruin the party. After they have had enough of Schmidt's disgusting moping, Jess, Winston and Nick pretend to be Michael Keaton as they email Schmidt to try to cheer him up.
Lying isn't always a bad thing. If your grandma buys you an awful, ugly sweater for your birthday, you're not going to tell her you hate it. You're going to give her a big smile and tell her thank you, you love it. By telling this little white lie, you're not trying to hurt the sweet old lady, you're just trying to protect her from the truth. When a little kid brings you a piece of paper with scribbles all over it, you tell him it's a work of art – you don't tell him it's terrible. Again, lying is sometimes necessary in order to save someone's feelings.
In the same way, Schmidt's roommates really did have good intentions when they decided to act as Keaton in emails to Schmidt. Their actions were genuine – they wanted to help him get over his breakups with Cece and Elizabeth, even if it wasn't the best way to do so.
And Schmidt realizes this. He knows his friends were just trying to help him, but it still hurts. One thing is for certain – even if a friend forgives another for lying, like Schmidt says him and Nick are all good, something will forever be gone...trust.
At the end of the episode, Schmidt moves out of the loft. Although he only moved 50 feet away, it is clear that the trust relationship with his friends is gone.
