In this episode of New Girl, Schmidt continues to date both Cece and Elizabeth. His pack of lies gets harder to keep straight, and it really takes a toll on him. Winston, still affected by his break-up with Daisy, tries to come to terms with the fact that he is now the only single one in the apartment. Nick discovers Schmidt's secret, and it doesn't take long before he spills the beans to Jess. The couple struggles with the decision of whether or not to tell Cece about Schmidt's two-timing ways.
Ultimately, it is Schmidt who comes clean to Cece. But the whole incident brings up an interesting situation – what would would Nick and Jess have done if Schmidt wouldn't have admitted his fault? Schmidt is Nick's best friend and he wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize that friendship or hurt Schmidt. On the other hand, Cece is Jess' best friend, and she doesn't want to see her hurt either.
Obviously, had that been the case, Jess should have told her best friend that her boyfriend was cheating on her. It's a friend obligation to do so, and she needs to tell her the truth, no matter how hard it hurts. She should be there for her every step of the way, holding her hand when she spends time away from Schmidt. (Which she should, since he was such a liar. We'll have to wait and see in the upcoming episodes.)
One possible outcome of Jess letting Cece know that Schmidt is a cheater is that Cece wouldn't have believed her, which happens quite often in these situations. In that situation, Jess would need to talk to Schmidt and convince him to do the right thing for Cece. That's were Nick comes in – although it's hard, he should help convince Schmidt to come clean. All the lying was negatively affecting him, and it was bound to end badly no matter what. Schmidt needs to do the right thing, and then Nick could be there for him afterward.
All around, this is just a hard situation. Schmidt got himself in a real mess, and there was no getting out of it. The moment he tells Cece the truth is a raw moment, and Cece's face makes you just want to break down in tears as you can feel her heart breaking. Later, Schmidt tells Elizabeth the truth as well, and she throws a pie in his face. It looks like Winston has a single man friend again in the loft.
