New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday. The surgery was to repair a torn labrum.
Sanchez hasn’t played since getting injured in the third preseason game. He tried to rehab the injury, despite doctors advising him to have surgery. However Sanchez couldn’t put off having surgery any longer and had it done. Sanchez wasn’t happy with needing surgery.
''I'm very disappointed that I can't be out there to help my team on the field,'' Sanchez said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. ‘‘But I'll continue to help our team in whatever capacity I can.''
Doctors are expecting Sanchez to have a full recovery, so look for him on the field in 2014. When he does return to the field, it most likely won’t be with the Jets. Sanchez is signed through 2016, although his cap for next year is $13.1 million. The Jets are committed to rookie quarterback Geno Smith, who they drafted in April, so the Jets are expected to cut Sanchez before a $2 million bonus is due in March, according to ESPN.
Sanchez has had some highs and lows in four seasons with the Jets. In his first two seasons with the team, Sanchez led the Jets to consecutive AFC championship games. However last season Sanchez struggled. Smith has been ok in his first five NFL start, and many believe that he is the future of the Jets.
In his NFL career, Sanchez has thrown for 12,092 yards with 68 touchdowns and 69 interceptions.
