Joe Girardi is staying in New York. On Wednesday, Girardi signed a four year, $16 million deal with the New York Yankees.
Girardi’s new deal has $16 million guaranteed and bonuses of up to $4 million. That means that Girardi’s new deal could be worth as much as $20 million. With the new contract, Girardi becomes the second-highest paid manager in baseball.He also becomes one of the ongest-serving managers in Yankee history. In 2017 when the new deal end, Girardi will have managed the Yankees for ten years, exceeding Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Miller Huggins, and his predecessor Joe Torre, according to ESPN New York. Girardi commented on the new contract on Wednesday.
"After talking with my family, we decided that this was where we wanted to come back," Girardi said, ESPN New York reports. "It's a special place to manage because of the opportunity that you have every year and the tools that they give you. The history of this organization is unbelievable. There are special things that happen here every year."
Girardi has a long relationship with the Yankees. He won three World Series titles with the Yankees as a catcher from 1996-1999 during a 15-year career as a player. Girardi has led the Yankees to the playoffs in four of his six seasons as a manager, winning the World Series in 2009. Since 2008, the Yankees have gone a major-league best 564-408(.580) under the direction of Girardi, according to the Associated Press.
While the Yankees missed the playoffs this year for the second time in 19 years, Girardi hopes they can get back to the playoffs and win championships in the years to come.
