New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has not yet been cleared by doctors to return to the field.
According to ESPN, Gronkowski, who has been recovering from a series of surgeries on his fractured forearm and ailing back, still has not been cleared to play by physician Dr. James Andrews. He also has not been cleared by Dr. Jesse Jupiter, who performed the latest surgery on his forearm.
While Grownkoski’s status for Sunday is uncertain, this news is creating doubt that the tight end will play when the Patriots host the New Orleans Saints.
The 24-year-old has not played at all this season after reinjuring his wrist during an AFC divisional playoff game against the Houston Texans in January.
The tight end’s slower-than-expected return has raised some questions about the severity of his injuries.
"It's basically nothing new," Gronkowski told reporters. "I mean, I'm just working hard every week, working hard out at practice, and nothing's changed, we're day by day, like we've been from the very beginning."
Last year, Gronk had 11 touchdowns in as many games, notes Pro-Football-Reference.com. There is no denying that the Patriots miss the jolt that he gives to the offense, but fans may have to wait a little while longer for his return.
