Reese searches street cameras to find who took Shaw, and tells Finch it was Root.

Finch approaches Sloan, thinking he is stealing from someone named Jason Greenfield, turns out he is his foster brother, and is trying to solve his murder. Finch asks if he could help.

Jason’s parents were addicts and burned down their house while cooking meth. Sloan’s parents fostered him. Jason became a hacker who suddenly was reported dead of an overdose, but Sloan thinks it was a murder.

In Jason’s apartment, Sloan and Finch find a flash drive, and on it contained an email stating that someone was out to kill him. An address for a storage unit was also found on a piece of paper.

Fusco meets Reese, tells him Root and Shaw working as a team.

Reese discovers that a hacking group killed Jason for his decision to leave, and they're the threat against Sloan because of the information he knows.

On the day Jason died, the storage unit was scrubbed clean with bleach. It belonged to John Glover, and another storage unit from the same group is found and owned by Samuel Miles.

Root places an envelope under a city bench then she takes Shaw into an underground system. She gives Shaw a blow torch to open a wired cage.

Sloan and Finch enter the storage unit belonging to Miles, but it is empty.

Root and Shaw then break into an apartment. A man comes out of the bathroom and attacks Shaw. Root tasers him. Shaw discovers that it is a CIA pickup site.

Root makes a call and gives the person on the other end an agent number and confirms their location.

Sloan uses a UV lamp to find a message hidden on the wall. It is a code consisting of various numbers and letters. Finch notices a camera and the door shuts, locking them in, and gasoline starts coming from the sprinklers. Reese opens the door in time and the room blows up.

Later, Finch recognizes coding on the wall, and connects it to a man named Peter Collier, member of a group whose purpose is to spread the message about government surveillance and privacy. Jason was a part of that group.

Finch discovers that the code on the wall is a key cipher, and Reese and Tim go to Jason’s apartment to find the key.

CIA shows up to get Root and takes her away, they believe Shaw is a CIA agent, and Root is her prisoner.

Root is in a cell and gives Shaw some code. After being questioned by another CIA investigator, the code fixes his radio, convincing him that she works for CIA.

Reese and Sloan are looking through Jason’s apartment. They find a book in a heating vent entitled The American Revolution: A Concise History, and Finch discovers that it matches code algorithm.

A flash bomb is thrown into the apartment and some men enter and take Sloan. Reese follows them and sees Collier enter a van.

Tim loses his cell phone so he can't be tracked.

Finch cracks the code and it is a plan to kill Jason that night.

Jason, alive, is seen in the same prison as Root, she reveals that she knows who he is
She knows he worked with the hackers but wanted out when he saw how violent they were. He worked a deal with the feds but they screwed him over. The CIA faked his death for his protection so he could tell them about the group, but they locked him away so that they can question him whenever they want.

The group is named Vigilance (“Eternal vigilance is the price of unity”). They recently murdered a data broker, which is the reason why Jason wanted to leave.

Root tells him she’s there to save him. Shaw places Root and the others in a truck for transport, and rides along in the front.

Reese and Finch find out Jason is alive and Finch sends Reese to the location where Collier plans to kill him and Sloan.

Collier reveals to Sloan that Jason is still alive. They reach their destination and knock him out.

Root unlocks herself as well as Jason.

Reese is waiting at the location given to him by Finch. He sees Shaw in the truck that holds Root and Jason.

Collier’s men get the tuck to crash and start to shoot at Reese.

Root escapes and grabs the envelope from earlier that contains an ear speaker and a gun. She and Jason leave the truck and shoot at Colliers men. She gives Jason a chance for a new life, and he escapes through the underground passage from earlier.

Collier’s men find Root, but Shaw shoots them, then she knocks out Root.

Collier holds a gun to Sloan’s chest as Reese approaches him. Collier shoots Sloan in a major artery and gets away, While Reese waits for the ambulance.

Laskey, shaken up, tells carter his real name, Mikhail Lesnichy, a Russian on the force. Carter finds out that HR placed Russians on the force to cement their deal with Russian Mob. The money he delivered earlier goes to HR, they stockpile it and already have millions stored.

Sloan meets with Finch and Reese after leaving the hospital. Jason calls him and tells him thanks, and that they will see each other soon. The phone disconnects.

Finch has Root locked up in a room with an ankle monitor. She tells Finch that he will make the machine angry by keeping her there.

He asks how she could be sure that the machine doesn't want her to be where she is now. He leaves and locks the door.
