Reese Witherspoon recently spoke with ELLE for its November issue and opened up about motherhood.

The Mud actress spoke to the magazine about how having children helped her out, Us Weekly reports.

"Somebody was saying to me the other day, 'Oh people get less interesting when they have kids.' I just don't think that's true," Witherspoon said. "I feel like I was so confused before I had kids. I almost got in my own way."

The actress has three kids split between her two marriages. She has a 14-year-old daughter, Ava, and a son Deacon, 9, with ex- Ryan Phillippe. With her current husband Jim Toth, Witherspoon has a 12 month old son, Tennessee.

According to New York Daily News, Witherspoon added, "Having kids made me clearer about who I was as a woman. I just wanted to exhibit good qualities for my daughter."

"I was a little competitive before I had kids - probably really competitive, to be honest."

The actress told ELLE, that having a daughter also changed how she saw movies and noticed that "I wasn't seeing women as the stars of movies."

Noticing this issue the actress said is what got her interested in producing movies.

The new issue of ELLE, with Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Melissa McCarthy is out Oct. 22.
