There’s a really strong chance that we will get a fifth season of Arrested Development or at least a movie chronicling more Bluth family misadventures. Producer/narrator Ron Howard was the latest member of the crew to say that there could be more on the way, since everyone wants to do it.
Howard spoke with Entertainment Weekly Radio on Thursday and while he could have talked about his latest movie, Rush, he had to say a few words on Arrested Development.
“Everybody wants to do more,” he said. “[Creator] Mitch [Hurwitz] did initiate the whole thing as the beginning of a kind of mystery that needs to be solved, and somehow or another I’d be shocked if we didn’t find a way to solve it and do that.”
But then he said that the rest of the cast is incredibly busy. After all, that’s why most of season four’s episodes never featured the entire cast. “There’s no timetable. No writing has begun,” Howard continued. “Creatively, I think it is everybody’s intention [to do more].”
In recent weeks, talks of a new season of Arrested Development have heated up. While there were reports over the summer, last month, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said there was “no question” that the streaming service wants more. “It is just a matter of when and what form it takes,” he said.
On Monday, Hurwitz spoke at the New York TV Festival and during his keynote address, he said that season four always felt like the beginning of further Bluth stories, notes THR. Again, though, scheduling has kept them from making a film.
“All I've been able to say is, I really want to continue with this, and the cast really wants to continue with this,” Hurwitz said. “What my new thing is, because it might be tough to get the cast together for the four months you would need to make a series, is to try to get them together for four weeks sooner, and do the movie that is the story that we've been building up to in this show.” Essentially, it sounds like Hurwitz would rather make a movie first then come up with a new season.
Star Will Arnett also spoke with Digital Spy about Arrested Development. "There is a plan to do something - I don't want to say exactly what it's going to be yet, but we are actively talking about how it's going to come together in its next form,” he said. "Needless to say, we are going to continue on in telling the story of the Bluths and it will be sooner rather than later."
