The U.S. Capital in Washington was under a temporary lockdown after reports of shots fired near the building. There are also reports that a police officer was injured.
According to The New York Times, witnesses heard the gunshots after 2 p.m. NBC News’ Luke Russert tweeted at 2:19 that police were scrambling and stressed, “not a joke.”
Capitol Police did issue a quick email, telling people in the area, “Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, emergency supply kits and escape hoods; and move to your office’s assigned shelter in place location or the innermost part of the office away from external doors or windows.”
Terrance Gainer, the Senate's Sergeant at Arms, told USA Today that there are “reports of injuries,” while NBC Washington is reporting that at least one Capitol Police officer was injured and another person was airlifted to a hospital.
The Associated Press tweeted that the lockdown has been lifted.
A press conference is set for this afternoon. The House of Representatives was in session at the time, debating budget measures.
