Fans of the long-running series The Simpsons are in for a rude awakening. One of the main characters of the hit FOX show will be killed off.

Executive producer Al Jean admitted in a new interview with reporters that the writers are coming up with a plot line that might shock a lot of people.

He said they’re "working on a script where a character will pass away,” THR reports. “We are doing this story for the same reason we do all others -- we think it has a good emotional through line. The story will be produced this year though it may air in season 26."

The show has been around for 25 seasons, and this will hardly be the first time they kill of a character. In its duration, The Simpsons writers have killed off Homer's Las Vegas wife and Ned's wife Maude Flanders and more.
Jean did give a hint, however, telling reporters the character who will die has previously won an Emmy for being on the show.

"I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is," he told reporters, The Sun Network, who first reported the story, revealed.
