We open on the gang pitching a “milestone experiences” campaign to Allstate talking about a child’s first step, a dad giving his daughter her first driving lesson, etc. The Allstate people love it and think Sydney and Simon’s father/daughter agency is the perfect fit.
Sydney and Lauren are gossiping about people in the office while watching Zach break up with Claire, from the third floor. Then, Andrew swoops in as her shoulder to cry on and gets her phone number. Then, Andrew shows everyone his vision for the new Crest campaign, Sydney loves it but Zach asks why Andrew took out the copy he wrote. Andrew replies that he thought just the image was more compelling. Then, Simon comes over with the DVD with the Allstate Milestone campaign commercial. Simon is excited and says, “I’ll finally be present for the birth at something I’m proud of.” He realizes his comical error and tries to placate Sydney, who brushes off the comment. Simon and Sydney then say that it’s a re-enactment of when Simon taught Sydney how to drive and they both try to describe it at once. Then, Simon invites them all the come to the focus group to see them commercial’s unveiling and makes another odd comment that seems to upset Sydney but Simon apologizes and leaves. Zach then throws out a half-eaten bag of chips, which Andrew then retrieves. Lauren then says that Andrew is Zach’s Remora, a sucklefish that attaches itself to a shark, “living off his leftovers.” Andrew denies being Zach’s Remora.
At the focus group, the moderator instructs the group of people to watch the commercial then write their comments on a comment card. The gang is watching from a double-sided mirror. They play the commercial, which shows the dad driving on the highway with the daughter in the passenger seat, then the dad suddenly lets go of the wheel and wants to trade places with the daughter. She’s terrified. Some of the focus group members were frightened for the daughter while one guy thought it was hilarious. Then, one focus group member says that e father in the commercial was a “bad dad,” which Simon takes offense to. Sydney disagrees to but sees why the person would think that. This upsets Simon, who bursts into the focus group, which upsets the moderator. Simon then explains that the point of the commercial was that the distractions the father threw at the daughter were to prepare her. Sydney tries to calm Simon down by reminding him that most of the group liked the commercial. Then, it comes out that Sydney doesn’t know how to drive and that she never learned how after the “traumatic experience.”
Back at the office, Sydney says that she always lived in big cities so she never saw the need to learn how to drive. Andrew thinks she lived in big cities because she was scared to learn. Sydney then confesses that she and Simon laugh about it now, but at the time, she was really scared. Simon says that he never knew and Sydney says that it isn’t a big deal and walks away.
Simon then tells the gang that they need a completely new angle for the Allstate campaign even though the focus group loved the “bad dad” commercial. Simon then tells Sydney that they need to go meet with the Allstate people right away.
Simon and Sydney are in the car when Sydney realizes that Simon lied, there is no meeting with Allstate. Simon then tells Sydney that she “needs a good learning to drive memory. One that’s not so scary.” He lets go of the wheel as a joke then apologizes.
Sydney is behind the wheel and she’s nervous but the car isn’t moving. Simon wants to play some music to take the edge off and turns on a loud symphony but Sydney quickly turns it off. Sydney begins driving slowly with Simon encouraging her to speed up a tad more. She goes through a stop sign but stops when a bird lands in front of the car. Simon says that it will move. It doesn’t and then Sydney is traumatized that she killed it. She continues driving and they’re at a turn and Sydney has her turn signal on but Simon keeps telling to wait and then cars behind them start honking and Simon screams for her to turn on a red light.
Back at the office, Lauren, Zach and Andrew are trying to come up with a different campaign for Allstate. Suddenly, Andrew realizes that he is Zach’s Remora, gets mad and then storms out saying that he won’t be his Remora anymore.
Simon and Sydney get back to the parking lot and go over the other milestones of her childhood like when Simon taught her how to swim by “pushing me into Lake Michigan and telling me to find the shore.” Simon replies that he always thought he was “the fun, cool Dad” and realizes that he did “nothing to prepare you for life. I was just a scary, bad dad.” While Sydney tries to tell him that he wasn’t that bad, she hits another car, it’s another father with his daughter teaching her how to drive. The daughter thinks it’s odd that Sydney is “like 40” and can’t drive. The father calls Simon a “nut job” and Sydney stands up for him saying that he may not have taught her how to drive but he taught her other cool stuff like how to pick a lock, etc. Sydney then says she wouldn’t ever change learning those things. The father and daughter are confused and the father says to just forget the accident and he and his daughter leave.
Back at the office, Claire wants to cry on Andrew’s shoulder but he tells that he can’t let her do that. Then, Sydney and Simon return and tell everyone that they’re going with the “bad dad” campaign and that they have a million more horrific stories just like it. Then, Zach and Simon go off to brainstorm. Lauren then tells Andrew that Zach is Simon’s Remora and that everyone is someone’s Remora. Andrew then rethinks his position about consoling Claire and goes off to find her.
In the office, at night, Simon and Sydney are camping in a tent. He’s trying to make up for the horrific camping trip they had when he doused her in turkey urine in the middle of turkey mating season. Sydney seems relaxed until Simon starts playing the symphony again, which helps him relax in order to sleep.
