Tom Hanks has revealed a shocking revelation about his health: he has type 2 diabetes. The veteran actor revealed the news while on Late Show with David Letterman.

Hanks, who’s garnering Oscar buzz for his role in the upcoming film Captain Philips, revealed he’s been battling with high blood sugar since he was 36. He’s now 57.

“My doctor said, ‘Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy and not have type 2 diabetes,'" Hanks explained, Huffington Post reports. "And I said to her, 'Well, I’m gonna have type 2 diabetes.’”

He has, however, lost some weight but joked he will never be able to get down to his high school weight of 98 pounds.

Hanks joins Drew Carey, The View’s Sherri Shepherd, former Food Network star Paula Deen and more in having type 2 diabetes.

Daily Mail notes Hanks plays a captain whose ship gets overtaken by pirates in Captain Philips, which comes out on Friday.
