Jennifer Lawrence stars in this psychological thriller about a teenage girl and her mother who move to a town where a murder happened at the house at the end of the street. Things get dangerous when the girl gets close to the only survivor of the accident.
This movies provides enough thrills to keep you guessing until the very end. It makes you wary of who you can trust.

9. Paranormal Activity (2007)
This is a supernatural thriller film about a couple who start to experience paranormal events happening in their home.
The fact that this happened to a random couple and that these events cannot really be explained makes it truly terrifying. Its found footage format also gives audiences a sense of reality.

8. Panic Room (2002)
This thriller is about a mother and daughter trapped in a panic room after a group of men broke into their home. We tach as the two feel hopeless in their new home.
The film offers a lot of edge-of-your seat moments as well as a satisfying ending.

7. Last House on the Left (2009)
This thriller is about two girls who are brutally assaulted by a prison escapee and his crew. During a storm they find shelter at a home belonging to the parents of one of their victims, who take revenge after finding out their crime.
Though some scenes are hard to watch, this is still a great remake with more modern changes. Knowing the ins and outs of their home allowed the couple to get sweet revenge.

6. Wait Until Dark (1967)
This classic scare starring Audrey Hepburn is about a group of criminals who terrorize a blind woman, in search of a doll filled with drugs.
Not only is the main character blind, but she is being terrorized in the one place where she feels most comfortable, her home.

5. Poltergeist (1982)
This paranormal thriller is about a family whose home is taken over by ghosts, and also traps their daughter in an unknown universe.
The truly horrifying part of this film is not knowing when something is going to happen.

4. Amityville Horror (2005)
This is the story of a family who moves into a house where a brutal mass murder took place. The family moved after experiencing demonic forces in the house.
This remake is based on events described by the actual Lutz family, however some events are questionable. Either way it provides a great scare.

3. The Shining (1980)
A family moves into an isolated hotel after the father got a job as a caretaker. Trapped in the hotel by a snowstorm, the son starts seeing the ghosts who died there, and the father is possessed by a spirit and tries to kill his family.
What makes this film truly terrifying is that they're in unfamiliar surroundings, with someone they trust out to kill them.

2. Insidious (2011)
This film is about a wife and husband whose son is in a comma, trapped in another realm. Their house is haunted by ghosts and spirits, and the only way to stop it is to go into the realm and save their son.
This film introduced the idea that people themselves can be haunted, and no matter where they go, these spirits will only follow them.

1. The Strangers (2008)
This film is about a young couple, staying at their vacation home, who are terrorized by three masked strangers.
It is based on true events, and gives audiences the idea that anyone can come in to your home, and terrorize you.
