A public high school team in Wisconsin scored a whopping 82 points last Friday night - and didn’t even win. The Oconomowoc High School Raccoons overtook the Wisconsin Lutheran School Vikings 84-82 in a game that became the single largest-scoring football game in state history.
According to Yahoo Sports, the previous record for combined-point total in Wisconsin was 133. Last weekend’s game, which totaled at 166 points, was unheard of.
"It's obviously the best game I've ever been a part of," Oconomowoc quarterback Canton Larson said. "It could have gone either way, and we happened to come out on top. I'm speechless, to be quite honest." Larson tacked on eight touchdowns for his team that night.
Interestingly, when the first quarter of the game wrapped up, the score was just 8-7. Soon after, however, both offenses took off running.
The area’s Living Lake Country reports that this was the first time since 2002 that Oconomowoc was able to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran. Because of their rivalry, the team prepared as best they could.
"We had full pads all week. We knew we needed to get physical with them," Cooney player Nick Gomez said of his team. "We usually don't go pads in practice but we did this week. We got physical and stood them up when we needed to."
The national total-points record is held by Haven High School in Kansas, where they beat Sylvia High 256-0, but that was 87 years ago.
