After Caroline works out a schedule for Max so she can work at the diner, manage the cupcake shop, and go to pastry school at the same time, everyone at the diner throws a “surprise” party for Max.
When Earl suggests that Max and Caroline stay a few more minutes because their shift wasn’t over yet, Sophie barges in talking about the “surprise.”
Han scolds Sophie for ruining it, but Sophie in turn, tells Han off for ruining the “surprise” because Max is standing right in front of them.
When Luis comes in with the pizza, his chat with Sophie is more than entertaining in regards to their relations to Oleg.
Max finds this amusing before Han toasts that everyone is proud of Max. Max receives a book bag from everyone, as Caroline looks on with a tinge of jealousy.
“Am I transferring foster homes again?” Max asks as she wonders why everyone is smiling at her.
Sophie ruins another surprise by saying that there are more items inside the bag. Max finds a MetroCard and a pencil box filled with joints inside.
After the gift-giving, Caroline is hurt that there’s nothing for her.
The next day Caroline accompanies Max on the subway. Through some shoving and pushing, the waitresses get on the subway, but life doesn’t go as planned when a punk tries to steal Max’s book bag. As Max pulls her hardest, the guy at the other side of the subway door pulls also before Max loses her grip and bumps into Caroline, who bumps into a woman, who spills coffee on Caroline's blouse.
Max arrives late for the first day of pastry school with Caroline. Max jokes with Caroline that she should check if Max has lice before sneaking into the room late.
While Max relays to Chef Gorgeous, as Caroline likes to call him, that she was robbed on the subway, Caroline tries get the stain out of her blouse unsuccessfully. Instead, she wears Assistant Bebe’s workout clothes.
Bebe recruits Caroline to ask others what their pressed juice orders are, which Caroline finds the task beneath her especially in Bebe’s dog-inspired workout clothes.
While Caroline’s running around taking juice orders, Max is preoccupied with an intriguing peer named Deke, who possesses the same charm as Max. With Deke’s laughing fit, Max can’t help but laugh when Deke points out the sexual innuendos in baking.
Even though Max wants to stay away from Deke, it’s hard to do so when the diabetic Deke (ironic for a pastry chef, I know), purposely doesn’t take his insulin to lure Max into saving him. This forces Chef Gorgeous to put the two misfits together as partners.
