The Doctor Who special “The Day of the Doctor” had great success on the small screen and is enjoying success on the silver screen as well. The BBC drama, which celebrated its 50th anniversary pulled in over $2.91 million dollars at the U.K. box office.

The Doctor Who special featured three doctors instead of one. Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt started in the 80-minute show. Other guest stars included, Tom Baker, Peter Capaldi and Billie Piper.

This set a European record for alternative content, reported Variety. Alternative content in U.K. movie theaters will generate around $32.3 million in 2013 alone.

The TV special was screened on Saturday by 440 movie theaters in the U.K. at the same time as the episode aired for free on BBC.

The show was seen on over 1,500 movie theaters worldwide. In the United States the theatrical presentation of “The Day of the Doctor,” made $204,000. In Germany the special brought in over $317,000.

The special was shown again on 650 theaters nationwide in 3-D on Monday, Deadline, added.

Doctor Who will return next with a Christmas special which will air on Christmas Day.
