A newspaper flashes a headline of 4 being killed in a laboratory accident. The girl that survived the accident is buying items at a gas station. The attendant states one of the victims, Jack Benson, was a friend of his. The girl says that she is sorry and that he was a friend to her too. The man accuses her that the accident was her fault. He takes a step towards and she tells him to leave her alone. Just then cans fly off the shelf at the man, then an entire shelf falls on him. Scared, the man runs outside, only to see the hoses to the gas pumps on the ground, leaking gas, headed toward a newspaper stand on fire. The man runs away as the girl is inside says, “Please Lord, not again.” There is an explosion as she hides behind the counter.
Melinda is getting dressed while Grant takes a shower in the next room. She gets a text message and tells Grant that they have a mission. He comes in and says that they should take care to come in separately so no one suspects but Melinda has already left.
On the plane, Coulson tells Skye that they're heading to Batesville and determine if the suspect, Hannah, is a telekinetic. He states that he wants Skye to pay attention, grooming her to become a better agent.
Fitz-Simmons tell Coulson that the lab has been sealed down by the Department of Energy, but they can retrieve the disaster event data from the instruments. Coulson tells Skye that she'll stay in the car while he takes in Grant and Melinda. Skye is not happy about it at all.
The team drive to the house where townspeople have gathered outside of Hannah's home. Coulson introduces himself to Hannah and says that he's just there to talk, and one of the townspeople throws something at her. A police car goes out of control on its own and Coulson yanks one man out of the way just in time. Melinda shoots Hannah with the night-night gun, knocking her out.
The plane departs for The Fridge, and Coulson puts Hannah in a sealed room with electromagnetic shielding. He insists that there next interaction with Hannah will be crucial and tells Melinda that he wants her there to explain the situation.
Outside, Fitz-Simmons monitor Hannah's brainwaves and figure that she's agitated. Skye points out that Melinda sedated Hannah, and the scientists defend their teammate's action. When Skye asks why they call Melinda "The Cavalry," Fitz describes Melinda rescuing a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from over a hundred mercenaries. When she lost her vehicle, she rode in on a horse to rescue the agents. As Skye contemplates the information, Fitz-Simmons review the data from the particle accelerator in the hologram. When Skye tries to help, Fitz slaps her hand and says that she needs at least two years of training. She goes off to use her computer and Fitz and Jemma congratulate themselves on fooling her with her story.
Hannah tells Coulson that she was getting reports about a faulty coupling assembly. They replace the part and triple-checked it for damage, but found nothing amiss. Hannah blames herself for missing something and Coulson assures her that his team is trying to determine the truth. He explains that they believe she gained a telekinetic ability, and Hannah is surprised to consider that she's responsible. She insists that she isn't causing it and explains that God has abandoned her and is no longer protecting her from demons.
Coulson says that Hannah is a danger to them until they figure out how she got her powers and learn how to shut her down. As Coulson leaves, a figure appears briefly in the shadows.
Later, Skye asks to talk to Hannah, insisting that she's nice. She's checked Hannah's history and learned that she's a nice person who genuinely cares. Melinda insists that Skye stays away from their prisoner.
As Grant makes a meal, Skye complains to him about Melinda and her single-minded approach. The hacker suggests that Melinda needs to get laid and Grant advises her to be less confrontational. When Skye describes the story Fitz-Simmons told her, Grant tells her that the scientists were messing with her and says that Melinda only killed 20 mercenaries, not a hundred. He explains that Melinda isn't in it for the glory and was satisfied to get the job done.
In her cell, Hannah cowers in the corner as someone tries to open the door. She begs God to forgive her as the pounding continues.
Simmons finds the coupling that was the issue.
Skye goes over the incident reports and finds information on Tobias Ford, one of the dead technicians. He filed three safety complaints against Hannah and had it out for her.
As Fitz goes to the storage room. He finds a mop to use for a prank, unaware that a man is coming behind him. When he turns around, the man is gone.
Simmons examines the hologram of the accelerator and hears someone come in behind her. Tobias attacks her and smashes the hologram projector. He then dematerializes and Coulson runs in. Simmons tells him that there's someone else on the plane.
Tobias fades in out of thin air and shuts down the power to the engines. In the lab, Coulson realizes that they're going down. In the cockpit, Grant co-pilots with Melinda while Skye looks on. They try to bring the plane down on a field and realize that they don’t' have enough power for a vertical landing.
Coulson and Simmons strap themselves in as the plane touches down. They figure that Tobias is tormenting Hannah, and Skye offers to tell her that she's not at fault. Coulson tells Grant to escort Fitz-Simmons down to assess the damage, and they realize that Fitz is gone.
Fitz is trapped in the storage closet when the door jams. He manages to open the door and leave, and Grant and Jemma step out in front of him, startling him. They call Melinda, who tells that the main problem is in avionics bay two. She powers down flight controls and then goes to the cell door in case the ghost goes there.
Coulson gets to the emergency radio and calls out for help. However, Tobias smashes the generator and the system shorts out.
Skye goes to the cell and introduces herself to Hannah. Hannah apologizes for crashing the plane and Skye assures her that it isn't her fault and that she needs to stay in the cell because it's safe. Hannah asks if she believes in god, and Skye admits that she doesn't.
Melinda arrives and tells Skye that she'll stand guard, and that Skye is to help Coulson repair the emergency transceiver. When Skye argues, Melinda overrides her.
As they head for the generators, Simmons speculates that the scientists at the accelerator lab were trying to create a portal to another dimension. The energy trapped Tobias between universes, turning him into a "ghost." They enter the generator room and discover that Tobias has trashed the wiring. They hear something behind them and Grant tells them to go to work while he investigates. Tobias comes after Ward and they fight. Tobias finally appears behind him, knocking Ward unconscious.
As she helps Coulson, Skye complains about Melinda, calling her by her “The Cavalry”. Coulson tells her not to call Melinda that and explains that none of them had a gun, including Melinda. He says that it wasn't a rescue: they were the welcome wagon and it went south. When she walked out of the building, that part of her was gone. Skye figures that Coulson wants Melinda on the plane to see if he can help her find what she once was.
As they talk, Tobias locks them in to Coulson's office, and then grabs Skye and demands that they let him into Hannah's cell.
Fitz calls Melinda and tells her what Tobias can do, and that he's disappearing a little more every time he passes through. Tobias tries to attack Melinda in the dark but she slips away before he can tag her. He goes into Hannah's cell only to discover that she's gone.
Melinda leads Hannah out of the plane and into the surrounding woods. When Hannah wonders what she's going to do, Melinda says that she's going to fix the problem.
Coulson and Skye try to get out of the office, and Skye asks if any of Coulson's spy equipment works.
Fitz-Simmons wake Ward up and explained what happened to him. They point out that Tobias is using a wrench, and Ward ant figures it's the type of wrench used to loosen a coupling. Coulson reaches them on one of his wrist radios and explains that they're locked in, and they realize that Melinda isn't with either group.
Melinda takes Hannah to a nearby barn and explains that she needs to use Hannah as bait to draw Tobias out. Hannah wonders what she'll do then and Melinda says that she'll do what she has to.
Fitz has Coulson attach the wrist radio to the door and then overloads it with a signal, blasting the door open. Once the team reunites, they try to work out what Tobias is up to. Grant isn't interested in theories and figures that a gun will stop Tobias in either world. They go to the storage room to get their drones and Fitz's mop jumped out. Fitz screams and Skye suggests that Tobias is childish.
Tobias appears in the barn where Hannah is waiting for him. Melinda attacks him but Tobias is able to fade in and out, keeping one step ahead of her.
Skye tells the others that Tobias was trying to get Hannah's attention and spend some time with her. They realize that Tobias is trying to protect Hannah, and only attacked people that he thought were a threat. Meanwhile, Fitz releases the drones.
Tobias starts to drag Hannah out and Melinda manages to knock him down. Melinda and Tobias fight but Hannah tells him Melinda is a friend and pleads with him to help. Tobias says that he's trapped between the real world and Hell, and that he's being dragged there for loosening the couplings so that Hannah would visit him. Melinda tells Tobias that trying to hold onto the person he thought he could be is Hell, and he's dragging Hannah down with him.
As a drone arrives, Melinda tells Tobias to let Hannah go before her people arrive and make him do it. The team arrive outside as Tobias takes Hannah's hand... and then lets himself go, disappearing for good
Back on the plane, Skye makes a sleeping Hannah comfortable and tells Grant that the woman is doing better.
Skye goes to see Coulson, who is examining the transmitter. He says that it's a lost cause, and Skye tells him that Melinda isn't. Skye tells him that if anyone can bring her around, it's him. Coulson states Skye could really be good at bringing people in someday.
Skye goes to see Melinda in the cockpit as the agent prepares for takeoff, and sits down to keep her company.
Later, Simmons, Coulson, Ward, and Skye are playing Scrabble. Fitz comes in, covered in shaving cream, and wonders who pranked him. They all deny it, unaware that Melinda is listening in the cockpit... and smiling.
