Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, The Good Wife went and did it. With Cary and Alicia officially off on their own, it's time for the battle of the century.
Last week we left off with Florrick/Agos nailing one of the biggest clients of the Midwest: internet search engine Chum Hum. It looks like Cary and Alicia are on top of the world, and nobody can stop them.
And now it’s the very next day. With Diane ready to leave the firm for greener pastures, she prepares to give her last court argument of her career. But Florrick/Agos and Associates have other plans. Diane’s client is less than thrilled about Alicia leaving the firm and it’s not long before she’s convinced to leave Diane behind.
Of course, switching law firms the day of your court appearance isn’t exactly orthodox, and Will and Diane certainly aren’t going to take this nonsense lying down. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Will is in full-on bad boy mode, with his angry smirk and new tatted-up girlfriend.
But Alicia and Cary aren’t playing around either. And when Will refuses to hand over the necessary documents for the case, Alicia decides to pull in the big guns: the Disciplinary Commission. Yes, that’s right folks. The same exact disciplinary board that committed Will Gardner not too long ago. (The irony wasn’t lost on Will either.)
Alicia’s plan works just as she suspects. The board sides with her and Cary, of course, and demands that Lockhart/Gardner hand over the files. But by this point Will is mad. And he continues to find clever ways to avoid helping his new nemeses.
Meanwhile, Alicia is dealing with a little problem at home. Peter’s new ethics chair Marilyn is being a pain (as usual). She’s hanging around the Florrick home, trying to convince Alicia to let her give an ethics presentation to her firm. But all the time, she’s actually just trying to snoop around to find some trouble. Alicia quickly puts her in her place, but she can’t help but take pity on Marilyn due to her pregnancy. Hmmm, why does this pregnancy feel oddly suspicious? Like it’s going to come back and haunt us in a very, very bad way (does anyone else see a lawsuit in Peter’s future? Just speculation…)
Anyways, Alicia and Cary finally win their battle against Lockhart/Gardner and get (most of) the documents they wanted. But just when they go to celebrate, their client announces she’s switching back to Diane out of convenience. Looks like its back to square one for Florrick/Agos.
But by the end of the episode, it’s clear that Diane is the real loser. She may have gotten back her client but she receives a very polite phone call telling her that she lost out on the judgeship — which she had suspected for most of the episode. Well after initially losing her client, having her new hubbie testify for Alicia and Cary (oh yea, that happened too), and now having to watch her dream go down the toilet, it’s fair to say that Diane is at the breaking point. And what could be more dangerous than that?
Although less suspenseful than last week, this episode was clearly genius and dare I say — the best of the season? I think so. What did you think of The Good Wife this week?
