With Harmonic Convergence approaching, Korra must find a way to enter the spirit world and close the portal in the South Pole. Meanwhile, Mako’s investigation gets him into trouble.
We kick off the episode by checking back in with Tenzin and his family where we immediately learn that Jinora can see spirits that no one else can. Before Tenzin can give everyone a tour of the various ancient things located around the temple Korra arrives. She quickly catches them up on various current events and Tenzin decides it’s time for her to enter the spirit world. Tenzin tries various rituals to enter the spirit world but each fails. Tenzin grows increasingly frustrated with everyone, blaming them for the failing rituals, before revealing that he’s never actually entered the spirit world before. Kya urges Jinora to reveal her connection to the spirit world and her spirit friends. Jinora’s spirit friends lead Korra and the others to an ancient air bender meditation circle. Tenzin tries to cleanse the area of dark spirits and Korra shows off some of the spirit calming techniques she picked up from Unalaq. Jinora and Korra meditate and are able to pass into the spirit world.
Unalaq is still up no good. He’s still taking field trips into the spirit world to try and open the other portal. He figures that from the spirit side of the portal he should be able to open the portal with some good old fashioned water bending. He forces Eska and Desna to help him open the portal. When Desna is hurt by the energy released by the portal as they attempt to open the portal, Unalaq orders Eska to ignore him, but she refuses. Unalaq fails to open the other portal and apologizes to Vaatu for being unable to free him. Vaatu informs him that he hasn’t failed yet. Korra is still alive and Unalaq can still use her to open the other portal.
Meanwhile, Mako’s investigation of Varrick backfires completely. He tries to persuade Asami and Bolin into believing that Varrick is behind the various attacks that have happened around republic city. Unfortunately, Bolin and Asami have both been won over by Varrick and refuse to believe him. Varrick offers Mako a job as a security consultant and makes thinly veiled threats against Asami and Bolin, but Mako refuses. Later, Chief Beifong and other cops search Mako’s apartment after catching word of his collaboration with the Triple Threats and discover incriminating evidence. Mako is arrested in front of Asami and blamed for the theft of Future Industries’ stock of weapons.
