Today Show anchors Matt Lauer and Al Roker had prostate exams during this morning’s broadcast. It was all part of the show’s initiative to highlight men’s health issues this month.
Roker and Lauer had the exams live on national television and they took around 35 seconds each, reports Today.com. The two, along with NBC News’ Dr. Nancy Snyderman, spoke with Lauer’s doctor, Dr. David Samadi, about the tests, which are used to diagnose prostate cancer. Nearly one in six American men are diagnosed with it and it’s the most common cancer among men, not counting skin cancer.
“Your PSA has been quite steady, which I'm very happy about,” Samadi told Lauer. “Just for the numbers, it started around 0.7, and now it's around 0.9, so it hasn't moved, and that's what we pay attention to.”
He told Roker that his prostate is “a little enlarged, but it's not terrible.”
After his exam, Lauer said it didn’t hurt for him at all, notes The Huffington Post. “Is it the best 34 seconds of your life? Probably not. But if in 34 seconds a (doctor) can detect something that might save your life, what are we talking about?"
Roker did say it’s uncomfortable, but “obviously do-able.”
Roker and Lauer are also participating in No Shave November, as are the other male anchors on Today.
