Denver Broncos coach John Fox will receive heart surgery Tuesday and will miss games for 4-6 weeks.
Fox was hospitalized Saturday when he felt light-headed while playing golf. After undergoing tests, team spokesman Patrick Smyth confirmed that Fox will need aortic valve replacement surgery early next week.
According to the Associated Press, Fox knew about his heart condition but wanted to wait until February for an operation. When he was home in North Carolina over the Broncos' bye week, he was told the surgery couldn't wait any longer.
"It's something I've known I needed to take care of for a while," Fox told Fox News. "It's ironic this happened when I came to meet with the surgeon. I was hoping to wait but it's better to be smart about this."
58-year-old Fox also thanked fans for their support and addressed his condition. "I sincerely appreciate all of the support from friends, Denver Broncos fans and so many around the league today," he said in a statement Saturday night. "Although I am disappointed I must take some time away from the team to attend to this pre-existing health condition, I understand that it's the right thing to do. I have great confidence in our coaches and players, who are fully committed to our goals. I look forward to returning to coaching as soon as possible."
The Broncos will have to name an interim head coach, but have not announced a decision yet.
The 7-1 Broncos face the San Diego Chargers next on Nov. 10.
