’48 Hours’ proved, yet again, that while Brooklyn Nine-Nine isn’t a much watch comedy it can still be very enjoyable. And while Brooklyn Nine-Nine still isn’t a laugh riot it has, at the very least, been consistently smirk inducing. ’48 Hours’ continues to explore various pairings of characters and to the show’s credit it seems each character has interesting and differing chemistry with each new pair.

In ’48 Hours’ Peralta arrests a just released from jail jewel thief for a burglary matching his M.O. Unfortunately when Peralta arrests him he has almost no evidence linking the burglar to this particular crime and the precinct has only 48 hours to link the perp to the crime or else he can sue the precinct for unlawful arrest. And so Peralta, yet again, forces the rest of the precinct to help clean up his mess ruining everyone’s weekend.

Peralta and Santiago are paired together here and while most of the comedy didn’t come from their plot thread it did allow Peralta to show a sympathetic side. Santiago’s date plans, she rescheduled based on a guarantee from Peralta, were ruined and it seemed that her date was no longer interested after two cancellations. After Peralta comically picks her date out of a lineup of Facebook possibles he decided to call him up and explain that her cancelling was all Peralta’s fault. Peralta and Santiago’s fun chemistry was also displayed as he let her guard down a bit and allowed herself to find some of his antics funny – especially in the scene in which he holds a picture of the actual perp’s face up to his own and does some goofy narrating. While it is somewhat necessary for Peralta and Santiago to butt heads due to their particular personalities ’48 Hours’ showed that the show works best when the characters allow themselves to have some fun with Peralta’s goofiness.

The funniest subplot came between Holt and Jeffords. Jeffords, already having worked a double shift before Peralta’s screw up, refused to go home to sleep despite Holt’s orders. Jeffords holding back his yawns was particularly hilarious. And when Holt found out that Jeffords was avoiding his even larger and more muscular brother-in-law, Holt stepped up and ordered Jeffords to take down a Russian mafia kingpin by himself while the brother-in-law was in the precinct. Having a guy even more muscular than Jeffords was definitely a nice touch.

Boyle was also thrown a bone in ’48 Hours’ as he finally got to be the top dog in something, even if it was taste testing pies from Diaz’s and Linetti’s favorite pie shops. After having lied to appease Diaz he rocked everyone’s world by bringing in what he – revealed to be a foodie – thought was the best pie in the city. The pies also helped to pile onto Santiago’s ruined weekend when she sat in a piece while wearing her date dress.

’48 Hours’ turned out to be yet another solid half hour for the show. It still hasn’t reached spectacular comic heights but that doesn’t matter if it continues to be fun.
