Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin has been placed on the IR.
According to ESPN Martin suffered a shoulder injury attempting to catch a pass three weeks ago in a game against the Falcons. Martin was hopeful that he could wait to have surgery after the season, but the Bucs chose to let him sit out the rest of the year.
The Bucs are 0-8 so it doesn't seem logical to force rehab on Martin's torn labrum, because clearly there is nothing he can do alone to help turn it around for his team.
NFL.com reports that Martin did not have a very productive season in his shortened second season with the Bucs. In his rookie season last year he raked in 500 receiving yards, but did not do much in that category this season. He also only averaged 3.6 yards per carry this year, probably driving fantasy owners nuts in the process.
Mike James will fill in as the starter in the meantime while Martin tries to get healthy for next year.
