Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo dons a new mask this month in an effort to raise money and awareness for Movember.
The mask was painted by Marlene Ross and features the toque complete with a pom-pom, beard and mustache of Johnny Canuck. “It’s the Johnny Canuck head, something that I’ve grown accustomed to having on my mask over the years,” Luongo told In Goal Magazine.
Luongo first wore the mask in practice on Friday. At the end of the month, he will auction it off for money to be donated to the Movember charity. Movember takes place during the month of November, where men grow facial hair in an effort to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer.
“It’s for Movember, so I am going to be auctioning it off the end of month,” Luongo said. “Just not sure when I am going to be using it yet. It’s going to be tough for it to get into the lineup the way the other mask is playing right now so we’ll see how it goes.” Luongo also joked that the unique mask saves him from having to grow facial hair himself.
Yahoo Sports reports that two years ago, Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas (who now plays for the Florida Panthers) wore a Movember-themed mask and raffled off tickets through the Tim Thomas Foundation. The winner took home the mask.
