Damon Wayans Jr. made his boisterous return to Fox’s New Girl this week, making his first appearance as Coach since the pilot. It turns out that this week’s episode won’t be the last we’ll see of Coach, since the comedian has signed on to stay on for the rest of the show’s third season.
Wayans was originally signed on as a special guest star for this season, but he will be taking an extended stay on the show, both Entertainment Weekly and E! News confirmed.
Back when New Girl began, Wayans was cast as one of the three roommates for Jessica Day, Zooey Deschanel’s character. He couldn’t stay on because he was committed to ABC’s Happy Endings, which has since been cancelled. Lamorne Morris was added to the cast as a whole new character, which meant that if Wayans could come back, it wouldn’t be too hard to write him in.
In the current New Girl plot, Schmidt has moved out of the loft, so it is possible that Coach could move back in.
New Girl airs on Fox Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
