The hit Emmy-winning PBS drama, Downton Abbey, has been renewed for a fifth season.

USA Today reported that the renewal was not a surprise to fans or the industry. The fourth season of Downton Abbey had an average of 11.8 million viewers in the U.K. alone. Abbey is also the most-watched drama in PBS history.

Fans in the United States have been waiting for new episodes but the wait is almost over. The fourth season will air in the United States on Jan. 5-Feb. 23. A preview special will be scheduled for Dec. 1st titled, Return to Downton Abbey.

The Hollywood Reporter added that season five will start filming next year but other details surrounding the new season are unknown.

PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger spoke about PBS's excitement for the return of the Crawley Family and Downton Abbey. Kerger detailed that is PBS is excited to share season five with U.S. audiences. The fifth season of Downton Abbey is likely to air on British television next fall.

Abbey is a PBS Masterpiece and Carnival Films co-production.
