Evan Rachel Wood is opening up about her relationship with rocker Marilyn Manson, which was widely criticized publicly. The new mom admits it was a mistake to date him but people didn’t need to be so harsh about it.

Wood, now married to Jamie Bell, dated Manson for four years starting in 2006 when she was just 19 and he was 36 years old.

In an interview with the Daily Beast, the Charlie Countryman star said, "People were pretty mean. At the time I hadn't yet been exposed to that kind of cruelty from strangers. If people were wondering why I was acting so-called crazy or like a teenager, it's because I was. People go through phases. People make mistakes. People go through life and don't get it right every time."

In 2010, Manson proposed to Wood in Paris while on stage for a show but they ended it later that year, Us Weekly notes.

She went on to say that she emphasizes with both Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber for being the spotlight during crucial years of their lives.

"I can't imagine what it's like to be him,” she said of Bieber. “When you're a teenager in an adult career, people expect you to be perfect and expect you to never make mistakes or to be a reckless teenager. And then when you are, they give you such a really hard time for it. You have to remind them that you're still a kid."

Wood and her husband Bell, who she married in October 2012, welcomed a baby boy in July but the actress revealed she wants to be completely private about it. The couple hasn’t released his name and doesn’t want any photos published.

She explained, “…because kids don't really have a choice in the matter. It's such a shame when kids get harassed just because of who their parents are before they're old enough to decide who they are or who they want to be."
