FX has renewed the horror anthology series American Horror Story for a fourth season. The show continues to earn critical acclaim and draw viewers, as the third season, titled Coven, got off to a record start last month.
FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf announced the news today, praising the show’s co-creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. The fourth season will feature 13 episodes and will air in 2014. It is currently untitled.
“What [Murphy], co-creator Brad Falchuk and their producers Dante Di Loreto, Tim Minear, Jennifer Salt, James Wong, Brad Buecker, Jessica Sharzer, Douglas Petrie, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, Alexis Martin Woodall and the entire production team and cast responsible for the American Horror Story franchise have done is nothing short of extraordinary,” Landgraf said. “Every year, they create a riveting and brilliant new miniseries.”
Landgraf called Coven the “best yet,” and said he had “no doubt” that season four will be “even better.”
Coven premiered to 5.54 million viewers, up 44 percent over the show’s previous high mark. Its audience has continued to grow since then. FX said that the season has averaged 7.74 million total viewers, with 5.46 million in the key 18-49 demographic and 3.14 million in the 18-34 demo.
AHS airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. and Coven stars Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts and more. Each season features an all-new cast and story, but the show has consistently performed well at the Emmys. Both of the previous two seasons have earned 17 Emmy nominations each.
Coven ends on Jan. 29.
